EMERGENCY SERVICES DISPATCHER


GENERAL STATEMENT:

The RiverCom Emergency Services Dispatcher receives and prioritizes emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public, processes information with the aid of a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system and dispatches appropriate public safety agencies including police, fire and emergency medical units. This staff position monitors public safety units in the field, retrieves and enters computer data for law enforcement personnel, accesses teletype, monitors alarm systems, operates TDD/TYY, operates security devices and other related communications equipment.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Interacts with callers requesting emergency/non-emergency response or service from the community or public agencies.
Uses established protocols and the computer-aided dispatch system to determine appropriate actions(s) to be taken.
Monitors and maintains the location and status of police, fire, emergency medical and other authorized non-member agency units in the field.
Participates with the Administration in the development, implementation, and review of RiverCom procedures, and policies and training programs.
Enters and retrieves data on the ACCESS systems to assist law enforcement agencies in and out of Washington State.
Deals with sensitive information in a discreet and professional manner by maintaining confidentiality.
Maintains a positive customer service attitude at all times with the public, user
agency members, co-workers and supervisors.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Approximately 90% of duties are performed in a secured office with artificial lighting. There is limited opportunity for physical movement and the dispatcher must remain alert and responsive while observing computer display screen under low lighting conditions for uninterrupted periods of time. The dispatcher must have adequate hearing, visual acuity, manual dexterity, and mental disposition to successfully perform all essential duties.

Work week includes rotating shift work in a 24 hour-a-day, seven day-a-week operation that includes holidays. Telephone/radio headsets must be worn for long periods. In emergency situations, the dispatcher may be required to return to the Communication Center for additional shifts.

Regular, punctual and consistent attendance is a condition of continuing employment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required.
Must be willing to work varying shift schedules, overtime hours, holidays, and on-call as needed.
A telephone at residence is required.
Public safety communications experience is desirable.
Washington State Patrol ACCESS Level I and II Certification is desirable, or must be obtained upon completion of the dispatcher training program.
Certification in an Emergency Medical Dispatch program is desirable, or must be obtained upon completion of the dispatcher training program.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Qualified applicants must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's License and the minimum amount of automobile insurance required by Washington State law.
